Where’s Early Detection for Lung Cancer?

yelling orange with plum 300x198 Wheres Early Detection for Lung Cancer?

In our last “sound-off” day, I asked the following question: “What are the top lung cancer questions you would like to have answered by the foremost lung cancer thought-leaders, oncologists, scientists, researchers, etc.?”

The majority of you asked about early detection for lung cancer. “Where is it?”

I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Thierry Jahan, lung cancer specialist at UCSF Medical Center, at the Bonnie J Addario Lung Cancer Foundation Fifth Annual Golf Tournament.

Bottom line: Be proactive!

I was diagnosed early with lung cancer with an x-ray. I had a cold that kept on coming back and because I was 55 my doctor thought that we should take an x-ray to see if it was something more serious than a cold as it turns out it was. We weren't sure that it was cancer we just saw a spot. I had my CT scan the next day and my PET scan 2 days after that to confirm that it was lung cancer stage 1B. Often times lung cancer can show up as a mucus on the lung and doctors give anti biotic. I was very lucky that I had a pro-active doctor that ordered the CAT scan. That is how we can diagnose lung cancer early. The patient has to be just as agressive as the doctor. It is your life and you need to ask for the care you need.

CT for lung cancer appears to be better than mamography for breast cancer. And with the same radiation. IELCAP shows 80% survival at 10 years. And now we know it reduces mortality. I do not understand the doubts. Dr. J. Zulueta
