My Mom’s Letter to the President!

April 4, 2010

Dear President Obama,

I have written you before and so pray that this letter will be one of the ten that you read everyday. First of all, I want to say how much I admire you and could watch your speeches for hours. You are such a natural and I feel so very down to earth. I would give most anything to shake your hand or say a few words to you.

My main reason for writing is concerning health issues, although not necessarily the Health Reform Bill that was passed……YAY!!! You did what you said and you pushed it through like a gentle tiger.

I am a 66 year old female and I have stage 4 lung cancer. I have never smoked in my life and it’s unfortunate that we with this terrible disease always have to add that bit of information. President Obama, I know that your own Mother died of ovarian cancer at such an early age and I’m so happy that you are waging the war again on cancer. Our problem is that lung cancer is the leading cancer killer and also the least funded. I guess you could say most of that is due to the smoking stigma.

When my daughter found out about my cancer she set out to start a campaign to draw attention and awarness. With her Mother’s approval, it is called WTF? You get the double-entendre (Where’s the Funding) for Lung Cancer? She has done quite well with this and is now a part of the Bonnie J Addario Lung Cancer Foundation. They are doing such great things and making strides, but it’s still so difficult.

That’s why we need your help so desperately. Anyone diagnosed with cancer and especially lung cancer feel as though it’s a death sentence. That is because of such low funding there isn’t the research that is needed. Like, for example, why are so many never smokers and women and even young children getting this disease. Something needs to be done and as soon as yesterday. Please hear our pleas and advise if there is something more that we need to do to make a difference.

Please take a moment to read the enclosed printout. It gives the statistics and shows how very under funded lung cancer is compared to all the other cancers.

Warmest regards,

Leslie Lehrman

Note from Jen: I encourage each of you to also email President Obama at president@whitehouse.gov. Here is also a great article titled, “How to Email President Obama – And Be Taken Seriously,” that provides helpful tips.
