Let’s Keep Cancer Buzzing on Facebook–Lung Cancer

BraFitting 300x212 Lets Keep Cancer Buzzing on Facebook Lung Cancer

I’m sure many of you saw and/or wrote some colorful Facebook status updates today. Women were sharing their bra color in one word status updates: “red,” “beige,” “nothing,” to raise awareness about breast cancer. Pretty clever! Here is the latest article about the bra color campaign from Mashable.

I say we keep cancer abuzz on Facebook–this time lung cancer. Men, you are included! I know it’s late notice, but let’s give it a whirl. I am simply revising the bra campaign message for our “WTF Just White” campaign.

Here is the plan of action:

1. Send the following message to your Facebook buds (and members of any groups/pages you belong to):UPDATE: WRITE “Just WTF white”

“Hey there! Some MORE Facebook fun is going on…. write the color ‘just white’ in your status. Write ‘just white’ and nothing else. It will be interesting to see if people still think Facebookers are talking about their bra color. If so, they’ll certainly wonder who the heck these ‘just white’ fuddy-duddies are. Well, we may be plain, but we are warriors of lung cancer – THE #1 cancer killer. THE least funded. Wait, wait, wait…don’t tune out due to the stigma. Seriously, it will be fun to see how long it takes before people learn that you don’t even have to smoke to get it. WTF? (Where’s the Funding) for Lung Cancer? (ps…sometimes we get all crazy and wear beige too).”

2. Post “just white” in your Facebook status and leave it there all day!

3. If people ask you what your status update means…here’s what you can tell them (if you wish).

“White is the color that represents lung cancer. Most people don’t know that lung cancer even has a color or an awareness month (November). Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer and THE least funded. And, no, you do NOT have to smoke to get it. Get this, 60% of all new lung cancer cases are diagnosed in people who have never smoked or former smokers who quit decades ago. Seriously! So stigma, be gone. No one deserves lung cancer. We are all yelling “WTF?” (Where’s the Funding) for Lung Cancer. That’s why I’m ‘just white.’ That’s all.”

It’s completely up to you how you wish to respond and you can add our “WTF” blog address to your response if you like: www.wtflungcancer.com.
Ok “WTF-ers,” you always totally ROCK the house.

Let’s take advantage of the cancer chatter taking place. Of course, we hate breast cancer too. We thank our breast cancer warriors for keeping cancer top of mind!
(ps…Mom, just copy and paste the paragraph to send to your Facebook friends-and the suggested response too. No need to re-type).

I will also be doing my PR/social media “stuff” on Facebook, Twitter, etc…to spread the “WTF” word.

Your “Just White WTF Chick,”
Jen

HI this is great but LUNG CANCER COLOR IS CLEAR NOT WHITE- WHITE IS FOR BRAIN CANCER

  • Julia

    Hey there,

I LOVE the idea of doing something in response to the breast cancer bra thing, but I think if I wrote “WTF White” on my status, it would either A, make people think I’m bitter about the breast cancer thing because everyone knows I’m a lung cancer advocate… OR would have no impact at all because thre are a lot of ppl who don’t know what the color thing is… so they’d think I was writing WTF (the real meaning of that acronym- what’s going on!) and “white” to do what everyone else is doing.

I actually responded to this facebook campaign yesterday with this message:

“Black. And do you know what’s underneath my bra? Yes, those. But also what’s underneath – my LUNGS!”

That’s just my two cents, but I’ll definitely smile if I see WTF white on other people’s pages…

Glad to see this, because often times it seems like all of the focus is on breast cancer. This is in spite of the fact that prostate cancer kills almost as many men each year, but it doesn’t seem to have a color, or pretty ribbons, or huge corporate research donations. :( And the #1 killer of women is actually heart disease.

So, thank you for paying attention to the ‘other cancers.’ :-)

I just posted it as my status, and emailed the message to all my friends! Pass it on! Let’s make everyone aware of “WTF”!!

Thanks guys. You all rock. I am doing some behind-the-scenes PR/social media work. You should see all the chatter going on about breast cancer, lung cancer and other cancers. It’s incredible. In fact, one way to get a glimpse is to set up a Backtype account and put in key words. http://www.backtype.com/home/alerts. Thanks a bunch. Jen

It’s really scary when 60% of all new cases of cancer, in people who have never smoked or former smokers who had dropped a few decades ago.
