Mom Monkeys LIVESTRONG Guest Post: Monster Cookies & Stigma Kool Aid The Deadliest Combo of All

Mom with Hope & NED

I am beyond grateful that LIVESTRONG asked me to write a guest blog post about lung cancer and the stigma that surrounds it.  The LIVESTRONG blog is highlighting lung cancer stories as part of Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

I want to thank the WTF? community for sharing its experiences with this horrible stigma for inclusion in this post. I know it wasn’t an easy task, but it’s incredibly important to tell the full lung cancer story and how it impacts ALL of us. Sooooo…

…here’s what I have to say:  Monster Cookies & Stigma Kool-Aid – The Deadliest Combo of All

Thanks again LIVESTRONG. Keep up the awesome work.

Jennifer, I really enjoyed this post.  I embody the diversity you speak of, being 30 years old with stage IV lung cancer and nope, I’ve never smoked!  I feel like “never-smoker” is quickly becoming as common as telling someone my age or address.  I am tracking my journey at http://stageiv.wordpress.com and will continue to follow your blog.  Best wishes for your mom and you.  Jessica

My mom is battling this ugly disease.  Three years and counting.  And yes, she smoked, but she quit back in 1996. She wasn’t a heavy smoker, but got hooked during college, as many did in the 60s. I started my blog in Sept as a way to ‘vent’. And when I started it, I had not read a lot about the stigma, but I knew it existed.  And now I see more and more that it’s the stigma that continues to rear its ugly head.  At first there’s compassion when someone finds out mom has cancer…then it turns to disdain when they find out it’s lung cancer. Then, there’s the sucking of the teeth when I tell them that she smoked.  No wonder lung cancer can’t get the funding…folks are too busy judging to give.  I’ve written a bit about mom’s trials and the stigma at http://www.sunshinecoffeeme.wordpress.com.  Thanks for your honesty and thanks so much for sharing.

I wish you the best of luck in your recovery.  Unfortunately not enough is done to protect victims of all types of lung cancers.  I saw this article, and I thought that maybe it could be a resource to others looking for any type of information.

I agree! Wow Jonathon, I was reading that site and saw that they found asbestos in children’s school science kits. Its bad enough we still import the toxic chemical, let alone expose the youth to it! What’s wrong with us?!
