Seriously, Perez. Did you NOT understand this “Deserve to Die” campaign whatsoever. No, you didn’t.
It takes a nanosecond to understand this campaign by the Lung Cancer Alliance is NOT about smoking. The campaign is easily illustrating just the opposite – that ANYONE can get lung cancer. You don’t have to smoke to get it. Just ask my Mom…and too many others.
Yes, lung cancer is all inclusive – striking cat lovers, hipsters, the smug, voracious readers, children in your cul-de-sac, celebrities, dog lovers, ice cream lovers, Perez Hilton lovers. You get the point.
Here, let me help you out. In fact, 80% of people diagnosed with lung cancer have either never smoked or quit decades ago. That is a jaw dropping stat. It could be me or you. And guess what, virtually no one is doing anything about it.
On top of that, some people who have smoked are getting the non-smoker type of lung cancer. It’s not a black and white issue, like we’ve all been lead to believe for decades. It’s the leading cancer killer of both men and women and the least funded. Why doesn’t it get research dollars? STIGMA.
Why am I lashing out at you? I’m a former reporter. It looks to me like you just tried to wrap up this story with a quick update that defaults to the “usual” (smoking) instead of looking a bit deeper. Actually, you don’t even have to look very deep to find an accurate update (even with looming deadlines)…the click of a link, a link especially created just for the media on the Lung Cancer Alliance’s website.
Go figure.
Due to laziness…you just perpetuated the stigma, bro. And wrote a crappy piece on top of it. Way to go. Journalism at its finest.
Those 160,000 who will die of lung cancer this year thank you. My Mom too.
